Italian-Americans wanted Mafia II banned because they said it portrayed offensive ethnic stereotypes. A European Parliament member wants it banned because it trivializes mob murders. I have a better strategy: STFU about banning bad games, and they'll eventually fade away.

Sonia Alfano, the MP in question, also is president of Italy's association for the families of Mafia victims. "It really, really hurts," Alfano, recently said in an interview. "We can't allow this to happen, our wounds are still too fresh." Her father was murdered by the mob. It doesn't matter that it was 18 years ago, her wounds will always be fresh.

No offense to Alfano or anyone hurt by organized crime; this is still another one of those arguments where someone assumes their victim status gives them the authority to say what is and isn't appropriate for the rest of society. We deal with that a lot in video games. The fact Mafia II was released in August and this concerns a game most people have already rented or returned smacks of a publicity grab.

Bloomberg has a longer and more thorough story whose net effect is to intellectualize whining.

F*** that I would still release the game. I completely agree with you Luktus, people that

play the victim try their best to avoid another similar situation. It's a video game! Who

cares?! Mad

how about this: he's ITALIAN. italy (although sicily is part of italy, lul) isnt even where that stuff primarily occurs.

youre right. publicity only increases awareness and draws a lot more attention to negative things that these people are trying to crack down on. it's been this way for alcohol and drugs. even GTA gained a lot more publicity because of it. this was a foolish attempt; if it fails, it will only bring about the opposite of what their intents were.

this also makes me laugh since it just draws more attention to the "italian" stereotype. pardon me if this sounds insensitive, but italians and sicilians make a big deal about the distinction between themselves. if you mistakenely call a proud italian or sicilian the other, they will be very insulted (just like the scottish / irish social separation). "it's a different part of the fucking country". the rest of italy isnt under such a heavy mafia influence as sicily. the mafia style / family clan based upbringing still exists, but thats primarily sicilian.

point of the last comment goes to your " . . . gives them the authority to say what is and isn't appropriate for the rest of society" statement. due to the social / cultural "wall" (however you wish to call it) that still exists, its a bit laughable. an italian mafia (or victim) wannabe is trying to ban something outside the lifestyle of his own customs? lul.

theres a reason sicilian wives occasionally have husbands who randomly disappear after the first signs of domestic violence: those stereotypes are true.
